Rare Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Rare Fibromyalgia Symptoms You Never Saw Coming

“You’ve got what now?” Fibromyalgia already feels like a grab bag of misery—you know, the kind you never signed up for.

Pain, fatigue, brain fog? Check, check, and double check. But what if I told you there’s a whole underground club of symptoms nobody warns you about?

Let’s talk about the weird, wild, and completely confusing rare fibromyalgia symptoms that make you question your sanity—and your search history.

Some are just plain bizarre. Some feel downright scary. And all of them deserve a spotlight, because when your body starts acting like a dramatic soap opera character, you need answers. Not gaslighting.

Rare Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Now You See Me, Now You Don’t! (The Invisibly Weird Stuff)

These rare symptoms don’t exactly announce themselves with flashing lights. In fact, some are so subtle—or so absurd—you might dismiss them altogether. But spoiler: They’re real. And you’re not the only one feeling them.

Symptom What It Feels Like Why It’s Often Missed
Phantom Swelling Feels like your hands or feet are puffed up like balloons—except, they’re not. No visible inflammation. Doctors may shrug it off as “nothing.”
Burning Mouth Syndrome Tongue on fire, bitter taste, dryness from nowhere. Often mistaken for allergies or dental issues.
Vibrations or Internal Tremors Like a cellphone buzzing deep inside your body—without a call coming in. Completely invisible, but deeply disturbing.
Skin Crawling Sensation Imagine ants marching under your skin. Fun, right? Usually dismissed as anxiety or “all in your head.”

What in the Nervous System?!

Fibromyalgia doesn’t just mess with your muscles and energy—it plays hopscotch with your nerves. These rare neurological symptoms are proof that fibro can be sneaky and unpredictable.

  • Electric Shock Sensations: Sudden, sharp jolts like you’re being zapped with static. And no, it’s not your socks on the carpet.
  • Clumsiness & Dropping Things: Because apparently, we need to lose our grip on objects too.
  • Facial Twitching: Little spasms that come and go—just enough to make you think you’re imagining it.
  • Random Numb Spots: Like someone turned off your skin’s Wi-Fi in patches.

Gut Instinct Gone Wild

If your stomach had a personality, fibromyalgia gave it drama queen status. Digestive issues aren’t rare in fibro—but some of these are next level.

Rare Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Symptom Description
Sudden Food Sensitivities One day cheese is fine. The next? It’s like a warzone in your belly.
Nausea Without Cause No flu, no food poisoning, no explanation—just waves of queasiness.
IBS Flare Mimics Cramping, bloating, gassy misery—but your tests come back normal.
Swallowing Difficulties Sometimes your throat forgets how to work like a team player.

Sleep… or Something Like It

We all know about “non-restorative sleep,” but rare fibro sleep symptoms take it up a notch.

  • Sleep Paralysis: Your brain’s awake but your body’s frozen. And no, this isn’t a sci-fi nightmare.
  • Hypnic Jerks: That feeling of falling right as you’re drifting off—except it happens every night.
  • Hallucinations While Waking: A shadowy figure? A loud bang? Yep, that’s just your nervous system being extra again.

Weird Hormonal Rollercoaster

Your hormones are like moody roommates with fibromyalgia. You’re just trying to survive.

  • Hot Flashes (Not Just for Menopause): Surprise! You’re sweating like it’s summer in the Arctic.
  • Sudden Weight Fluctuations: You gain or lose pounds without changing a thing.
  • Low Libido & Hormone Disruption: Your body’s just not sending the right signals anymore.

Rare Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Rare Symptoms That’ll Make You Go, “Wait—That’s Fibro?!”

This is the “junk drawer” of rare fibromyalgia symptoms. The ones you’ve never heard of, but somehow live with every day.

Symptom What It Feels Like
Heightened Sense of Smell You can smell perfume from a block away—and it gives you a migraine.
Sound Sensitivity (Hyperacusis) A fork clinking on a plate feels like an explosion in your brain.
Allergic Reactions to Nothing Itchy, red, inflamed—and no actual allergen in sight.
Vision Distortions Blurry one second, sharp the next. Eye strain without a screen.

FAQ: You Asked, I Flared

Are these symptoms really caused by fibromyalgia?

Yes—and no. Fibromyalgia is a master of chaos. Some symptoms are directly related. Others are side effects of your nervous system being on constant high alert. Always check with a doctor, but trust your instincts, too.

Why don’t doctors warn us about these?

Because they’re under-researched, under-recognized, and frankly… weird. Many medical professionals still see fibro through a 1990s lens. We’re rewriting the playbook now.

Am I the only one with these odd symptoms?

Not at all. Rare doesn’t mean unique. The fibro community is full of warriors who experience these—many just haven’t connected the dots yet.

Should I be worried?

Weird doesn’t always mean dangerous. But if something feels scary or new, absolutely bring it up. You deserve to be taken seriously—even when your symptom sounds like a sci-fi plotline.

Let’s Wrap This Up (Before Another Symptom Starts)

Here’s the truth: fibromyalgia isn’t just about pain and fatigue. It’s an entire spectrum of strange, often invisible experiences that can leave you feeling isolated—or downright confused.

So if you’ve ever wondered, “Is this just me?”—it’s probably not. From phantom swelling to internal earthquakes, this body of ours has a flair for the dramatic. And while these rare symptoms may not show up in every brochure or medical website, they’re part of the story, too.

You are not alone. You are not crazy. You are not making it up.

What about you?

Which rare fibro symptoms have you experienced? Any of these ring a bell—or did I miss something even weirder?

  1. Hi i have fibromyalgia and a lot of them symptoms but I have also been diagnosed with FDN so I dont know where one start and one ends as both make my daily life hard and the doctors have left me to it.

  2. Thanks for sharing. I don’t feel so alone with all the strange symptoms I have. I was diagnosed with fibro in 2008 but had it under control for a while. About 3 years ago, I started having other symptoms and was diagnosed with FND (functional neurological disorder), which can cause some of these symptoms plus MS and Parkinson like symptoms. So, my nervous system has been experiencing a lot of stress, which increases symptoms or causes others to rear their ugly heads. I plan on reading through your posts for more encouragement. 🙂

  3. Internal earthquakes, what a wonderful description of this weird event! The big twitches have in the past few years seen my upper and lower jaws clash so violently that my bottom left canine tooth, cracked across halfway down for decades but until this event perfectly secure, got locked with the upper canine. Violently. The lower tooth was broken right across, the remnant was swallowed but nearly breathed in with a coughing fit. The tip of the upper tooth was indented and the enamel bitten through. The next external twitch saw a hand full of raspberry shampoo wipe across both eyes as I aimed it for my scalp. Another standout result for the earthquake syndrome, especially as I have chronic dry eyes.
I take precautions for the safety of our cats and little old dogs, not boiling a kettle if they’re with me in the kitchen for instance. Letters, birthday and Christmas cards, official forms, either online or written ruined by a big twitch! I’m thankful that the strongest quakes seem to be abdominal, because they do just come out of nowhere.

  4. Does anyone ever get mucus in their lungs? I get this occasionally, especially after a difficult bout of fibromyalgia, pain and weakness. I have to cough it up, and after about an hour of strong, coughing and hacking it up I am fine. 95% of the time it is clear, and once it’s finished, it’s finished for that time. During that time, my breathing has wheezing. Once I clear my lungs through the coughing, my breathing no longer has any wheezing. Is this unique to me?

    1. Dear Karen I just experienced a huge flare up this week and one of my new symptoms was exactly as you described oh lucky us 😥

  5. THANK YOU for sharing this info. It helps me feel like I’m not going crazy. I’ve got these symptoms and more that my doctors over the years didn’t tell me about, just telling me I have fibromylgia. When I went to a neurologist for my other autoimmune disorder, I was listing all of my freaky symptoms and he just kept saying, “Yep, fibro.” One I didn’t see here is the burning skin sensation I get. Not part of my hot flashes, but isolated sections of my skin that suddenly feel like they’re on fire. Different spots on different days feel like someone is holding a torch to my flesh. Doc said, “Yep, fibro.”

    1. I also suffer from burning feelings all over my body. My body, head and face are covered in hives. I shower everyday it feels like I’m being stung all over by hundreds of bees. G.P. prescribed antihistamine but they are not helping. I’m at the end of my tether with Fibromyalgia and the inflections it puts on our bodies. With many other painful effects I suffer with Fibro, sensitivity to smell, taste, touch, noise, light. Then the painful side of Fibro, not forget the dreaded brain fog. Fibromyalgia, Is one of the worst life debilitating illnesses to suffer.

    2. I had this too, almost daily. Blood tests found that my B levels were very low. I now take B complex supplements & only feel that sensation occasionally.
Maybe this information can help you. Good Luck!

  6. Does anyone get the feeling that their skin is on fire and tingly? It hurts to touch or have anything touch it. I get it sometimes on half of my face along with a headache on my forehead and sometimes it’s on the sides of my neck and extends down to my chest and around my.

  8. I often get a sensation that a drop of water has dripped on random parts of my body and there is nothing there. I randomly smell cigarette smoke and I may be driving down the road in my car that has never had smoke in it.

    1. Me too!!! I thought my ex was haunting me, he was a heavy smoker. The crawling under the skin and the internal earthquake. So many more that I don’t want to think about them. I feel you ❤️

  9. I get those symptoms too. I also think my hair or other parts of me smell foul. Or clothes in my wardrobe seem to stink. My husband constantly has to check and tell me it’s in my head. It’s horrible. I often think I can smell burnt toast too!

    1. Talk to your Doc. Burnt toast smell
can be a sign of impending stroke. My son’s Doc told him that when he was battling a brain tumor.

  10. I appreciate reading your post on fibro, I was diagnosed in 1996, sometimes I feel crazy! Am I dreaming this up?!
Am sorry for all of you having this disease! God assures me that in heaven I will have glorified bodies!
God helps me through this complicated process, His words in the Bible walk me through this. Marcia, blessings friends 🧡

  11. It’s frustrating, dropping things. Feeling of water on random areas of my skin. Ghost pains for no reason. Nail salon guy constantly reminding me to relax my hands. Pot or whirlpool only way to relax. Pot to many side effects. Whirlpool takes time not readily available. Fatigue no social life because I have to support myself. Over 3 decades of wondering what it would be like to be normal. I’m sorry it’s just discouraging. Doctors telling me Depression hurts. Like Dora I just keep swimming.

    1. 30 yrs for me too. Been disabled for 5 yrs now. Walk with a rolator. It’s not funny anymore. I have been taking morphine for a year now and it helps a lot. ❤️
